Using WordPress To Setup An E-Commerce Website That Is SEO Friendly
WordPress is great for running a website or online blog but it lacks in terms of e-commerce ability. When it comes to building a great e-commerce website, many webmasters have suggested looking into other options like Magento and other open source scripts that are available for free. However, recent advancements in WordPress e-commerce plug-ins have presented a viable way to run e-commerce solutions off of your WordPress based websites. WordPress comes out of the box very SEO friendly, so it’s an excellent option if you can couple it with a functional e-commerce plug-in that gets the job done right. Throughout my many years of building websites and trying to find e-commerce options for many of them, I have tested out all of the WordPress plug-ins available for selling things online. Some of them are better at different things while some of them are simply not good at all. Below, I have mentioned three plug-ins which I have extensive experience with and were easy to make SEO optimized.
WP E-commerce – This is a free shopping cart plug-in that lets customers buy your products or services online. It works for digital downloads and it also works for physical goods that require shipping as well. Unfortunately, while working with this plug-in I ran into numerous different bugs and my frustration level began to grow. Almost every time that I tried to integrate this plug-in into a website, I ended up scrapping it and moving on to something else. As the development of the plug-in grows, I fully expect that these bugs will be fixed and the plug-in will make an excellent free option. As it stands though, I would not recommend the WP e-commerce plug-in for anyone that is looking to run an e-commerce website and handles a large volume of products.
Simple WP Shopping Cart – Hands down, if you sell digital products or services online then you must have this plug-in. It’s free, has a variety of different display options and it integrates directly into PayPal. This is the best plug-in if you’re looking to save money and want a simple solution for WordPress.
WP eStore – This is by far my favorite plug-in throughout all of the e-commerce solutions that I have tried for WordPress. Although it isn’t free, it’s only about $50. However, this plug-in is not going to be a perfect fit for someone who needs to handle a large volume of products or if they want to ship any goods to their customers. I recommend the WP eStore plug-in for someone who runs digital goods or services. For instance, if you are a software developer and you would like to sell the programs that you make online, this plug-in will be a fantastic fit for you. It even handles the security aspects of your selling and allows you to generate secure tokens and keys that can be used for your customers to download the product. You can assign a specific number of downloads for each key that are generated so that it cannot be shared with other people.
Ultimately, WordPress might not be the best for e-commerce solutions but there are lots of plug-in options out there. While it might take a considerable amount of time to get plug-ins working in your favor, the outcome will be well worth it. Using WordPress as the foundation for an e-commerce website means that you will have an out-of-the-box SEO friendly site that can even be enhanced with the use of further plug-ins.
